Hans-Joachim Backe

Dr Hans-Joachim Backe is an Associate Professor at the Center for Computer Games Research of IT University, Copenhagen. He previously worked at Ruhr-University Bochum, and Saarland University, Germany, where he also received his MA and Phd in Comparative Literature. His dissertation on “Structures and Functions of Narrative in Computer Games” received the International Comparative Literature Association’s Anna Balakian Memorial Award of 2010. He is chair of the Games and Literary Theory Conference Series and was chairperson of the ICLA Research Committee on Comparative Literature in the Digital Age. His research revolves around the aesthetics of digital games and comic books. He has published extensively on strategies of self-referentiality and discourses of alterity in these media, as well as on their relation to each other. Other research interests include ecocriticism, narrative theory, and media theory.

In the twenty years since Warren Spector introduced the “Immersive Simulation” it has developed into a prevalent, yet ephemeral term that is hotly debated every time a newly released game is associated with it. In this introduction, the editors trace the crucial commonalities of Immersive Sims – their solution-oriented game design, their empowering world design, and their outspoken creators – while showcasing the thematic breadth of the essays in this special issue.
